Feeling Nervous

Feeling Nervous

Article by Angela Haldane

Q. I often feel "nervy" – what do you suggest I do to calm myself?

A. Some people are "strung" this way, so rather than resist it, it is better to understand anxiety and live accordingly. Herbal medicine has many nervine tonics to support and tone the nervous system. See your registered medical herbalist (MNZAMH) such as Natural Ange Ltd for advice or try the "Stress Less" herbal formula available on this website.

I recommend someone professional to talk to, either a counsellor or psychologist. Emotional Repolarisation Technique to release trapped emotions – I can help to refer you to the right practitioner for you in a consultation.

Make sure you socialise with your family and friends – face to face, rather than through social media. This is far more therapeutic!

Minerals such as magnesium and potassium are a good way to balance a frazzled nervous system.
This online free mineral appraisal will help you select the right mineral formulae for you, available on this website.

A good B complex vitamin (30-50mg) is a good daily investment for your nervous system. It is a water-soluble vitamin that is easily excreted with diuretics such as tea, coffee and fizzy drinks.

Eat nuts, seeds and vegetables as they are rich in magnesium, potassium and calcium – all water-soluble minerals that are required to soothe nerves. Snacking on a trail mix during your busy schedule will also stabilise your blood sugar by providing a steady energy source.

Exercise is a great way to alleviate stress, and balance mind and body. Meditation and yoga are also great ways to manage anxiety. And laughter – it really is the best medicine!
