Difficulty sleeping - How to get a good sound sleep

Difficulty sleeping

Article by Angela Haldane

Q. I have difficulty sleeping, and waking all the time during the night. What can I do?

A. Wind down before bed, and dim the lights so that your brain secretes melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone that induces sleep.

Take magnesium and potassium phosphate to promote relaxation within your nervous system and muscles. Often this resolves the problem of waking or being a light sleeper. Mineral appraisal

Sleep Mix can also be purchased from this website – it contains the herbs Californian poppy which helps restore the most chronic states of disturbed sleep patterns to a more desirable sleep pattern.
Passionflower and Chamomile both work together to relax the nervous system, alleviating stress and mind chatter... such that you get a restful sleep.

Write lists for the next day to keep the mind chatter at bay.

If you wake, resist the temptation to look at the clock, as this can send you into a spiral of desperation! Enrol in a meditation course to manage stress, and teach yourself the tools to find tranquillity.

Look at ways to make your life less hectic, delegate jobs or cut out anything that is not essential.

B complex is very useful for calming the nervous system too. Many people lose these valuable vitamins by drinking coffee, fizzy drinks or excessive amounts of water. I recommend a good quality multi vitamin – available via your natural health practitioner.

Lavender essential oil is a useful relaxant, put a few drops on your pillow. Or go for a walk, pick some lavendar and make yourself a lovely lavendar footbath before bed.

If the problem continues seek professional help – there are other options to consider.
